General Information

The Metal Shop, has a variety of tools and machinery that don't fit well in either the Clean Roomor Wood Shop. There is one big worktable available here to set up equipment and gather for classes/workshops.
If you have any issues with Metal Shop equipment, the slack channels associated with this space include #general, and #shop-Metal.

Metal Shop Area Safety

  1. Do not use any machine you are not trained on and are comfortable using. If at any time you are unsure of what you are doing, stop immediately and ask for help on Berea Makerspace Slack, or email info@bereamakerspace.org.
  2. Do not use any machine that is not in good working order. Stop, unplug, and leave a note on the machine and notify Makerspace leadership.
  3. Never assume a tool is properly adjusted; always check the tool before use.
  4. Make sure to wear closed-toe shoes.
  5. If you have long hair, or loose clothes, make sure to tie them up.
  6. Helmets are required when operating the welder.
  7. Make sure that you are wearing gloves and a welding jacket when welding
  8. Create adequate ventilation when operating the welder in the space - open the garage door, and turn on the exhaust in the wood shop side.
  9. Inspect your work area for any flammable materials and remove them from the area.
  10. Never touch the electrode or metal parts of the electrode holder with skin or welding clothing.
  11. Insulate yourself from the work and ground. No bare feet, no wet clothing.
  12. Inspect all electrode holder and cabling for damage.
  13. Never modify or hack any equipment. If you think an improvement can be made, discuss it on Slack!
