General Information

Metal Fabrication equipment can be found inside the Metal Shop. When using any equipment in the metal shop, make sure to wear all proper safety equipment.

If you have any issues with Metal Shop equipment, the slack channels associated with this space include: #general, #shop-metal.

Orientation

The order of this document is to give some basic information of what will happen in the Metal Shop during the training. This orientation assumes that they have gone through our general space orientation.

Do not operate any power equipment if you are under the influence of anything, in a hurry, are tired, or are not feeling well.

Inspect the equipment before using it.

How to use:

Set-Up:

  • Determine the size and type of material you will be using.
  • Using a CAD Program of your choice (Lightburn, Inkscape, Corel, Adobe, ect.) create your design.
  • Open Sheet Cam, and import your design using the correct scaling that you created with your design.
  • You want your drawing position to be in the bottom left-hand side.
  • Set up the cutting parameters for your material.
  • Click the run post processor option to create the gcode for the plasma router.
  • Save your gcode to your USB drive.
  • Align your material onto the sheet bed.
  • Using the magnetic grounding lug, attach to your material out of the way where your designs will be cut.

Using the Machine:

  • Open fire control and use the green button to load your design.
  • Set your work area to zero, when you find a place you want to work on the sheet (Where your design will be cut on the sheet).
  • Set the jog speed at a reasonable rate, move the plasma head around the work area to make sure the plasma head won't run into anything.
  • Ensure you are in proper PPE and the weld curtain is closed to protect the other Makerspace members.
  • Ensure air pressure is above 80psi on the plasma torch controller.
  • Press the Start button to start the cutting process.
  • When complete and you are sure the design is completed, close the Fire Control program.
