Metal Shop

General Information

The Metal Shop contains a variety of tools and machinery that do not fit in the Clean Room or Wood Shop. A large worktable is available for equipment setup, classes, and workshops.

Report equipment issues in Slack in #general or #shop-metal.

Orientation and Access

Training is required to use Metal Shop equipment. Check the event calendar for upcoming orientations.

Safety

• Do not use any machine you are not trained on and comfortable using. If you are unsure at any time, stop immediately and ask for help on Berea Makerspace Slack or email info@bereamakerspace.org.
• Do not use any machine that is not in good working order. Stop, unplug, leave a note on the machine, and notify Makerspace leadership.
• Never assume a tool is properly adjusted; always check the tool before use.
• Wear closed-toe shoes.
• Tie back long hair and secure loose clothing.
• Wear a welding helmet when operating a welder.
• Wear gloves and a welding jacket when welding.
• Create adequate ventilation when operating the welder – open the garage door and turn on the exhaust in the metal shop.
• Inspect your work area for flammable materials and remove them.
• Never touch the electrode or metal parts of the electrode holder with bare skin or wet clothing.
• Insulate yourself from the work and ground – no bare feet, no wet clothing.
• Inspect all electrode holders and cabling for damage.
• Do not modify equipment. Discuss proposed improvements on Slack.
