Brother PE-540D
General Information
The Brother PE-540D is an embroidery machine in the Clean Room near the sewing area. It is used for designs up to 4" x 4" (100 mm x 100 mm).

Orientation and Access
Use requires authorization by an approved instructor. Check the makerspace event calendar for tool orientations. Ask in Slack if no embroidery orientation is listed.
Training on the Dream Machine 2 covers shared embroidery fundamentals. Ask your instructor to explain the PE-540D's controls and threading before using this machine.
Safety
- Keep fingers clear of the needle and moving embroidery frame.
- Keep the frame's travel area clear of tools, fabric folds, and other objects.
- Turn off the machine before changing the needle. Turn off and unplug it before cleaning.
- Stop if the needle strikes the frame, thread jams, or the machine makes an unusual noise. Ask for help before continuing.
Setup and Operation
Use the PE-540D operation manual for the threading diagrams, screen controls, and detailed procedures.
- Inspect the needle, embroidery frame, and thread path. Check that the embroidery unit is attached and its travel area is clear.
- Select a built-in design or prepare a compatible design for USB import. Keep it within the 4" x 4" embroidery area. Check the manual's data requirements before exporting from Embrilliance.
- Choose stabilizer for your fabric and design. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer without wrinkles or stretching the fabric out of shape.
- Attach the frame using the manual's instructions. Check that it is secure.
- Install the bobbin and thread the machine using the PE-540D threading diagrams. Do not use another model's control sequence.
- Select the design and check its position and clearance before stitching. Test on scrap fabric with the same stabilizer first.
- Lower the presser foot and start embroidery. Stay with the machine and keep hands clear of moving parts.
- Change the upper thread when prompted for the next color. Stop the machine before correcting thread problems or replacing the bobbin.
- When finished, remove the frame, trim thread tails, and remove stabilizer as appropriate for the project.
Maintenance
- Remove scraps and thread after each use. Return the hoop and accessories to their storage location.
- Turn off and unplug the machine before cleaning the bobbin area. Follow the manual for removing and reinstalling parts.
- Replace bent or damaged needles before use.
- Report damage, persistent thread jams, or unusual noises in Slack.
Troubleshooting

Bring fabric, stabilizer, and machine embroidery thread for your project. Check the PE-540D manual or ask your instructor for compatible needles, bobbins, and bobbin thread before buying supplies. Basic supplies may be available during orientation.
