Needles, Thread, and Stabilizers
These items are considered consumables. Basic supplies may be available during orientation, but you should plan to provide your own for ongoing projects.
Needles
The Dream Machine 2 uses standard home sewing machine needles (130/705H system). For embroidery:
- Standard Embroidery: Needle size 75/11
- Heavyweight Fabrics/Stabilizers: Needle size 90/14
- Ball Point Needle (gold colored) 90/14: NOT recommended for embroidery
- Metallic Thread: Use needle size 80/12 and sew at reduced speed (600 spm recommended)
Important: Change your needle regularly - every 8-10 hours of sewing or after every major project. A bent or dull needle can cause skipped stitches, thread breaks, or damage to your fabric.
Bobbin Cases
[INSERT PHOTO: The two bobbin cases side by side - one with green marking, one without]
The machine includes two bobbin cases for different applications:
- Standard Bobbin Case (green marking on screw): For normal sewing and embroidery with included 60-weight embroidery bobbin thread. Do not adjust the tension screw.
- Alternate Bobbin Case (no color on screw): For pre-wound or other embroidery bobbin threads. Has adjustable tension for different thread weights.
Troubleshooting
Common Problems and Solutions
Thread breaks frequently
- Re-thread the machine carefully, ensuring the thread follows all guides
- Check needle for burrs or damage - replace if needed
- Verify tension settings are appropriate (upper thread too tight can cause breaks)
- Check for lint buildup in tension discs or thread path
- Ensure bobbin is correctly installed and unwinds smoothly
Design doesn't stitch correctly or is misaligned
- Verify hoop size matches design size
- Check that fabric is hooped tightly without distortion
- Ensure stabilizer is appropriate for fabric type
- Re-import the design file if corrupted
- Check that the embroidery unit is properly attached with no gap between unit and machine
- Ensure nothing is obstructing the carriage movement
Bobbin thread shows on top (upper thread too tight)
- Upper tension is too tight - decrease tension setting
- Bobbin is incorrectly threaded - reinsert bobbin correctly
- Check that the bobbin thread is passing through the tension spring properly
Built-in camera cannot detect embroidery positioning sticker
- Ensure sticker is firmly attached with no wrinkles
- Check that sticker is within the camera's detection area
- Room lighting may be too dim or too bright
- Use a new sticker - reused stickers may not be detected properly
Maintenance
After Each Use
- Remove bobbin and clean bobbin case area with included brush
- Wipe down machine exterior with soft, dry cloth
- Cover machine when not in use
- Clean the race to remove lint and dust
Regular Maintenance
- Oil: This machine was manufactured with the necessary oil and should NOT be oiled by the user. If you hear unusual noises or the handwheel becomes difficult to turn, contact an authorized Brother dealer.
- Needles: Change regularly (every 8-10 hours of sewing)
- Professional Service: Have machine professionally serviced annually
Cleaning
- Use the included brush and cleaning tools
- Never use compressed air - it forces lint deeper into mechanisms
