Wood Shop

General Information

The Wood Shop contains tools and machinery that are not suited to the Clean Room or Metal Shop. It has one large worktable for equipment setup, classes, and workshops.

Report equipment issues on Slack in #general, #shop-cnc, or #shop-wood.

Orientation and Access

Training is required to use Wood Shop equipment. Check the event calendar for upcoming orientations.

• See CNC Router for CNC router orientation requirements.
• If you are not authorized to use a machine that requires orientation or authorization, you may use it only under the direct supervision of an authorized member. See All Woodworking Equipment for the equipment list.

Safety

Before Using Equipment

• Use only machines you have been trained to operate and feel comfortable using. If you are unsure what to do, stop and ask for help on Slack or email info@bereamakerspace.org.
• Do not use a machine that is not in good working order. Stop, unplug it, leave a note on the machine, and notify Makerspace leadership.
• Check each tool's adjustments before use. Do not assume it is set up correctly.
• Do not modify equipment. Discuss proposed improvements on Slack.

Clothing and Protective Equipment

• Wear closed-toe shoes and safety glasses.
• Tie back long hair and secure loose clothing.
• Remove rings.
• Do not wear gloves when operating power tools.
• Wear respiratory protection when appropriate for the work.
• Wear hearing protection for loud equipment or extended use.

Shared Work Area

• Keep floors clean, clear, and dry.
• Keep extension cords off the floor when they are not in use.
• Be aware of people around you while operating equipment. Do not approach someone while they are using equipment.
• Do not eat or drink around power tools.
• Do not put drinks or other liquids on cast iron surfaces.

Finishes and Waste

• Dispose of rags and paper towels used with oil-based or potentially flammable finishes in the oily waste can.
• Store finishes in the yellow fire cabinet.
