First Steps
[INSERT PHOTO: The right side of the machine showing the main power switch]
- Power on the machine using the main power switch located on the right side
- Allow the machine to initialize and the touchscreen to load
- Visually inspect the needle, bobbin, and thread paths for any obstructions
- Check that the appropriate hoop is installed for your project
- Ensure the carriage moves freely and nothing is obstructing its path
Basic Embroidery Workflow
[INSERT PHOTO: The embroidery unit carriage and frame holder, showing where the hoop attaches]
1. Design Selection
- Press the Embroidery key on the home screen
- Choose from built-in designs (including Disney), alphabet characters, frame patterns, or import via USB
- Use the touchscreen to position and resize the design on the virtual hoop
- Press the Preview key to see how the design will look
2. Hoop the Fabric
- Select the correct hoop for your design size – the screen will show which hoops are compatible
- Loosen the frame adjustment screw and separate the inner and outer frames
- Cut a piece of stabilizer larger than your hoop
- Place stabilizer on the back of your fabric (the side that won't be visible in the finished project)
- Lay the fabric right side up (the side you want to show) on the outer frame, with stabilizer underneath
- Press the inner frame into place, making sure the fabric is taut with no wrinkles or sagging
- Tighten the frame adjustment screw

3. Attach the Hoop
- Press the "Presser Foot Lifter" button to raise the presser foot
- Slide the embroidery frame into the frame holder, aligning the guides
- Lower the frame-securing lever to lock the hoop in place
- The machine will detect the hoop and show it on screen
4. Threading
- Thread the machine following the numbered path on the machine
- Use the automatic needle threader (press the "Automatic Threading" button)
- For the bobbin, use embroidery bobbin thread in the standard bobbin case (green marking on screw)
- Pull up the bobbin thread so both threads are accessible
5. Position Confirmation
- Press the Trial key to move the frame and verify the design fits in the desired location
- Use the LED pointer to check where the needle will drop
- If needed, use the arrow keys on screen to nudge the design into the exact position
- For more precise positioning, press the Camera key to see the fabric on screen
6. Thread Management
- Review the thread color order displayed on screen – this shows which colors will embroider in what order
- Thread the machine with the first color
- The spool stand LED will light up to help you identify which spool to use next
7. Adjusting Thread Tension
If your test stitches show tension issues, you can adjust the upper thread tension in two places:
- Quick adjustment during embroidery: In the embroidery screen, press the Tension key (+/-) to adjust tension for the current project. Lower numbers (1-3) loosen tension, higher numbers (7-9) tighten it. The default is usually 4-6.
- Global adjustment for all embroidery: Press the Settings key, then General Settings, then navigate to page 6/8 of the Embroidery settings screen to adjust "Embroidery Tension". This affects all embroidery projects.
For most projects, the automatic tension settings work well. Only adjust if you see:
- Loops on top of the fabric → tension is too loose (increase number)
- Bobbin thread pulling to the top → tension is too tight (decrease number)
8. Start Embroidering
- Press the "Start/Stop" button to begin
- Monitor the first few stitches to ensure everything runs smoothly
- The machine will automatically stop when the first color is complete
9. Color Changes
- When the first color finishes, the machine stops and raises the presser foot
- Remove the first thread, thread the next color
- Press "Start/Stop" to continue
- The spool stand LED lights up to indicate the next color
10. Finishing
- Remove the hoop carefully when all colors are complete
- Cut excess threads
- Remove stabilizer according to project needs

- Scan fabric to coordinate stippling patterns with fabric designs
Appliqué Function
Create professional appliqués easily:
- The machine automatically creates cutting lines and placement guides
- Create multiple appliqués in one hoop
- Use frame patterns for custom appliqué shapes
Needles, Thread, and Stabilizers
These items are considered consumables. Basic supplies may be available during orientation, but you should plan to provide your own for ongoing projects.
Needles
The Dream Machine 2 uses standard home sewing machine needles (130/705H system). For embroidery:
- Standard Embroidery: Needle size 75/11
- Heavyweight Fabrics/Stabilizers: Needle size 90/14
- Ball Point Needle (gold colored) 90/14: NOT recommended for embroidery
- Metallic Thread: Use needle size 80/12 and sew at reduced speed
Important: Change your needle regularly - every 8-10 hours of sewing or after every major project. A bent or dull needle can cause skipped stitches, thread breaks, or damage to your fabric.
Thread Recommendations
- Use high-quality embroidery thread for best results
- Popular brands: Isacord, Madeira, Robison-Anton, Brother
- For bobbin work: No.5 or finer hand embroidery thread, flexible woven ribbon (advanced technique)
Stabilizers
Proper stabilization is critical for good embroidery results:
- Cut-Away - Best for knits and unstable fabrics
- Tear-Away - Good for stable wovens
- Wash-Away - For freestanding lace and projects where no stabilizer should remain
- Heat-Away - Dissolves with heat from an iron
Troubleshooting
Common Problems and Solutions
Thread breaks frequently
- Re-thread the machine carefully, ensuring the thread follows all guides
- Check needle for burrs or damage - replace if needed
- Verify tension settings are appropriate (upper thread too tight can cause breaks)
- Check for lint buildup in tension discs or thread path
- Ensure bobbin is correctly installed and unwinds smoothly
Design doesn't stitch correctly or is misaligned
- Verify hoop size matches design size
- Check that fabric is hooped tightly without distortion
- Ensure stabilizer is appropriate for fabric type
- Re-import the design file if corrupted
- Ensure nothing is obstructing the carriage movement
- Check that the hoop is fully seated in the frame holder with the lever locked
Bobbin thread shows on top (upper thread too tight)
- Upper tension is too tight - decrease tension setting using the Tension key in the embroidery screen
- Bobbin is incorrectly threaded - reinsert bobbin correctly
Upper thread shows on bottom (upper thread too loose)
- Upper tension is too loose - increase tension setting using the Tension key
- Upper threading may be incorrect - rethread carefully
Machine makes unusual noises
- STOP IMMEDIATELY and investigate
- Check for thread tangles in the bobbin area
- Ensure needle is properly inserted and not bent
- Look for lint buildup in moving parts
- Clean the race area thoroughly
Fabric puckers during embroidery
- Stabilizer may be insufficient for fabric type
- Hoop tension may be too loose - rehoop fabric more tightly
- Thread tension may need adjustment
Carriage won't move or makes grinding noise
- Check that nothing is blocking the carriage path
- Ensure the hoop is properly attached and not hitting the machine
- Look for tangled thread under the needle plate
- Turn machine off and back on to reset
Maintenance
After Each Use
- Remove bobbin and clean bobbin case area with included brush
- Wipe down machine exterior with soft, dry cloth
- Cover machine when not in use
- Clean the race to remove lint and dust
Regular Maintenance
- Oil: This machine was manufactured with the necessary oil and should NOT be oiled by the user. If you hear unusual noises or the handwheel becomes difficult to turn, contact an authorized Brother dealer.
- Needles: Change regularly (every 8-10 hours of sewing)
- Professional Service: Have machine professionally serviced annually
Cleaning
- Use the included brush and cleaning tools
