General Information

The gas and induction forges are located inside the Metal Shop. When using any equipment in the metal shop, wear all proper safety equipment.

If you have any issues with Metal Shop equipment, the slack channels for this space include #general and #shop-metal.

Orientation

This orientation assumes you have already completed the general space orientation.

  • Do not operate any power equipment if you are under the influence of anything, in a hurry, tired, or not feeling well.
  • Inspect the equipment before each use.
  • Wear appropriate PPE: heat‑resistant gloves, safety glasses, closed‑toe leather shoes, and natural fiber clothing (cotton or wool). Avoid synthetic fabrics.

Equipment

Gas Forge – Housemade Apollo Forge

The Apollo Forge is a propane‑fired gas forge suitable for blacksmithing, knife making, and heat treating.

  • Outer dimensions: 11.5"W × 12.25"H × 19"D
  • Inner dimensions: 4.5"W × 6.5"H × 18"D (forge volume approx. 530 in³)
  • Maximum temperature: Up to 2,400 °F (1,315 °C) depending on propane pressure and burner tuning

For detailed startup, tuning, and shutdown procedures, see Gas Forge Operation.

Induction Forge – Coal Iron Works 15 kW Induction Forge

The induction forge uses electromagnetic fields to heat metal rapidly and efficiently. It is ideal for localized heating and is safer than a gas forge for many operations because there is no open flame.

  • Power: 15 kW, requires a dedicated 240 V, 60 A circuit
  • Heating: Small pieces reach forging temperature in seconds; depth of heating adjustable by coil design and power level

For detailed setup, operation, and shutdown procedures, see Induction Forge Operation.

Recommendation: Most single users should stick with the induction heater. It has much faster setup, tuning, and cooldown.
