Needles, Thread, and Stabilizers

These items are considered consumables. Basic supplies may be available during orientation, but you should plan to provide your own for ongoing projects.

Needles

The Dream Machine 2 uses standard home sewing machine needles (130/705H system). For embroidery:

  • Standard Embroidery: Needle size 75/11
  • Heavyweight Fabrics/Stabilizers: Needle size 90/14
  • Ball Point Needle (gold colored) 90/14: NOT recommended for embroidery
  • Metallic Thread: Use needle size 80/12 and sew at reduced speed

Important: Change your needle regularly - every 8-10 hours of sewing or after every major project. A bent or dull needle can cause skipped stitches, thread breaks, or damage to your fabric.

Thread Recommendations

  • Use high-quality embroidery thread for best results
  • Popular brands: Isacord, Madeira, Robison-Anton, Brother
  • For bobbin work: No.5 or finer hand embroidery thread, flexible woven ribbon (advanced technique)

Stabilizers

Proper stabilization is critical for good embroidery results:

  • Cut-Away - Best for knits and unstable fabrics
  • Tear-Away - Good for stable wovens
  • Wash-Away - For freestanding lace and projects where no stabilizer should remain
  • Heat-Away - Dissolves with heat from an iron

Troubleshooting

Common Problems and Solutions

Thread breaks frequently

  • Re-thread the machine carefully, ensuring the thread follows all guides
  • Check needle for burrs or damage - replace if needed
  • Verify tension settings are appropriate (upper thread too tight can cause breaks)
  • Check for lint buildup in tension discs or thread path
  • Ensure bobbin is correctly installed and unwinds smoothly

Design doesn't stitch correctly or is misaligned

  • Verify hoop size matches design size
  • Check that fabric is hooped tightly without distortion
  • Ensure stabilizer is appropriate for fabric type
  • Re-import the design file if corrupted
  • Ensure nothing is obstructing the carriage movement
  • Check that the hoop is fully seated in the frame holder with the lever locked

Bobbin thread shows on top (upper thread too tight)

  • Upper tension is too tight - decrease tension setting using the Tension key in the embroidery screen
  • Bobbin is incorrectly threaded - reinsert bobbin correctly

Upper thread shows on bottom (upper thread too loose)

  • Upper tension is too loose - increase tension setting using the Tension key
  • Upper threading may be incorrect - rethread carefully

Machine makes unusual noises

  • STOP IMMEDIATELY and investigate
  • Check for thread tangles in the bobbin area
  • Ensure needle is properly inserted and not bent
  • Look for lint buildup in moving parts
  • Clean the race area thoroughly

Fabric puckers during embroidery

  • Stabilizer may be insufficient for fabric type
  • Hoop tension may be too loose - rehoop fabric more tightly
  • Thread tension may need adjustment

Carriage won't move or makes grinding noise

  • Check that nothing is blocking the carriage path
  • Ensure the hoop is properly attached and not hitting the machine
  • Look for tangled thread under the needle plate
  • Turn machine off and back on to reset

Maintenance

After Each Use

  • Remove bobbin and clean bobbin case area with included brush
