CNC Plasma Table
General Information
The Langmuir Systems CrossFire XR is a CNC plasma table located in the Metal Shop. It is used to cut electrically conductive materials (steel, stainless steel, aluminum, etc.) using a Lotos LTP5500D plasma cutter. The system is controlled by Langmuir's FireControl software, and part designs are prepared using SheetCam TNG 7 (Computer‑Aided Manufacturing).
If you have any issues with this equipment, the slack channels for this space include #general and #shop-metal.
Safety First
- Always wear appropriate PPE: safety glasses, welding gloves, closed‑toe leather shoes, natural‑fiber clothing, and hearing protection. A welding helmet with a shaded lens (at least shade 5) is required when operating the plasma cutter.
- Ensure the work area is clear of flammable materials.
- Never leave the machine unattended while cutting.
- Do not operate the plasma cutter without proper ventilation – the water table helps reduce fumes, but additional ventilation may be needed.
- Disconnect power before performing maintenance or changing consumables.
Equipment
Langmuir CrossFire XR
The CrossFire XR is a 4' x 4' (1220 mm x 1220 mm) CNC plasma table with a heavy‑duty C‑channel frame and a powered Z‑axis. It uses FireControl software for machine control and SheetCam TNG for generating G‑code.
Other Components
- Water table: reduces smoke, sparks, and dross.
- Torch: The X45 CNC hand torch uses consumables that are compatible with Hypertherm parts.
- Computer: A dedicated Windows PC located in the Clean Room (corner PC) has FireControl and SheetCam installed.
Software Overview
FireControl
FireControl is the machine control software for the CrossFire XR. It is already installed and configured on the computer. Launch FireControl and connect via USB to the electronics enclosure.
Key features:
- Manual machine control (jogging, zeroing, setting origin).
- Torch height control (with optional THC).
- Real‑time voltage and height display.
- Load G‑code files and run cutting programs.
SheetCam TNG
SheetCam TNG 7 is the CAM software used to generate G‑code from DXF or SVG designs. It is installed on the corner PC in the Clean Room.
Workflow:
- Import your design (DXF/SVG).
- Create operations (e.g., outer cut, inner cut).
- Assign a plasma tool (material thickness, amperage, cut speed, pierce height, cut height).
- Add lead‑ins/lead‑outs and set the start point.
- Generate G‑code and save the file.
- Load the G‑code in FireControl and run the cut.
Operation
Pre‑Operation Checklist
- Turn on the plasma cutter (Lotos LTP5500D).
- Inspect the machine: Check for loose cables, damaged wires, or debris on the rails.
- Check the water table: Ensure water level is adequate (just below the material).
- Verify torch consumables are in good condition.
- Power on the electronics: Turn on the CrossFire XR controller.
- Start FireControl and ensure it connects to the controller (green status).
- Home the machine using FireControl.
- Load material: Place your sheet on the cutting table and secure it if needed.
- Set origin: Move the torch to the starting position (typically lower‑left corner) and zero the X, Y, and Z axes.
Running a Job
- Load G‑code in FireControl (File > Open).
- Verify the toolpath using the visualizer.
- Adjust settings if needed (cut height, pierce height, cut speed – normally pre‑set in G‑code).
- Perform a dry run (optional): Run the program with the torch raised to check for collisions.
- Start cutting: Press Cycle Start in FireControl.
- Monitor the cut for issues (e.g., torch dive, poor cut quality).
- Stop if needed: Use the FireControl stop button or the machine's E‑stop in an emergency.
Post‑Operation
- Wait for the machine to complete and return to origin.
- Turn off the plasma cutter.
- Remove cut parts and clean the water table (remove dross and debris).
- Inspect consumables and replace any worn electrodes, nozzles, or swirl rings.
- Shut down FireControl and power off the controller.
- Clean the work area.
Consumables
Plasma cutting consumables wear out regularly. Always keep a stock of the following:
| Consumable | Function | Replacement Indicator |
|---|---|---|
| Electrode | Conducts current to create the arc | Deep pit (>1.5 mm) or hafnium insert wear |
| Nozzle | Constricts the arc for cutting precision | Enlarged or deformed orifice; black swirl marks indicate moisture issues |
| Swirl ring | Swirls the gas to focus the arc | Cracks, deformation, or poor gas flow |
| Shield cup | Protects the consumables and directs gas flow | Cracks, burn‑through, or excessive spatter buildup |
| Retaining cap | Holds the nozzle and electrode in place | Damaged threads or burn‑through |
Recommended consumables for the X45 torch (compatible with Hypertherm parts):
- Electrodes: Standard (20‑70 A) and FineCut.
- Nozzles: 20‑50 A (1.0 mm) and 70 A (1.2 mm).
- Swirl ring: X45 specific.
- Shield cup: X45 machine shield.
Where to buy:
- X45 torch consumables on PlasmaDyn (our recommended source)
- Langmuir Systems Store – official CrossFire XR parts
General tips:
- Clean, dry air extends consumable life. Use a moisture trap on your compressor.
- Reduce amperage for thinner materials to avoid overheating consumables.
- Check the swirl ring for cracks every time you replace the electrode or nozzle.
- If cut quality degrades (increased dross, angularity, or slower cutting), replace consumables.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Machine does not connect | USB driver issue; wrong port | Reinstall drivers; try another USB port; restart FireControl. |
| Torch does not fire | Plasma cutter not on; consumables worn; air pressure too low | Turn on plasma cutter; replace consumables; check air supply (4.5 PSI). |
| Poor cut quality (dross, bevel) | Worn consumables; incorrect cut height or speed | Replace electrode/nozzle; adjust cut height and speed. |
| Torch dive or crash | Incorrect Z‑axis settings; THC issue | Check pierce/cut height; recalibrate Z‑axis; disable THC temporarily. |
| Moisture in air lines | Condensation in compressor | Install an air dryer or moisture trap; drain tank regularly. |
| FireControl won't load G‑code | File missing post‑processor; incorrect format | Use FireControl post‑processor in SheetCam; save as .nc or .txt. |
| Water table leaks | Damaged weld or fitting | Contact Langmuir support. |
Maintenance
Daily/After each use:
- Clean the water table: remove dross, slag, and debris.
- Wipe down the rails and drive gears.
- Inspect the torch and consumables.
- Check the air filter on the plasma cutter.
Weekly:
- Lubricate the rails (linear guides and ball screws) with light machine oil.
- Check all cable connections (motor, limit switch, USB).
- Drain the compressor tank and air filter.
Monthly:
- Perform a full machine inspection: belt tension, limit switches, electronics enclosure ventilation.
- Clean the water table completely and refill with fresh water (add rust inhibitor if desired).
- Update FireControl and SheetCam to the latest versions.
Annually:
- Replace the water table coolant (if using).
- Have a qualified technician inspect the plasma cutter and electronics.
